DS106 Fall Class of 2017,
Really there is no need to panic! Yes, there is a lot of work that you will have to complete for the semester but please do not get discouraged. Once you get the hang of all of the digital mediums that this class requires than the work will go by really quickly. Most of the time it doesn’t even really feel like work because no other class at Mary Washington lets you be this creative and control the direction of your work more than this course. Patience will be the key to figuring out the assignments and yes it will take time and hard work, but I promise it will be worth it in the end.
Advice I wish I had- Going into this semester I really didn’t know what to expect from this class. The syllabus was daunting right out the gate which is to be expected from any online course because we don’t meet in class and the best way to teach is to complete work and learn from mistakes. I wish someone had told me to really use the first two weeks to master all of the mediums that we use in the class. I only signed up for the websites and downloaded programs to my computer the first two weeks and as a result my work clearly suffered during that time. I started off in a hole in the class because I didn’t take the extra time to really play around with the programs that we use. My advice is to really take advantage of the first two weeks of the course because there really isn’t a lot of work those first two weeks. Play around with the programs, practice writing up summaries, and start working on your blog right away. It will help you tremendously to start off fast and don’t look back!
